I went outside tonight for about an hour trying to get a shot of the Aurora Borealis, but she did not show her face, too bad. Here's a few I did get.

So here's the last three from the photo shoot that happened on Monday. I don't dislike the third photo, but it pales in comparison in my eyes, to the first two. In the first photo, it's the colors, the textures, the different sections, and the off balance feel to it. In the second photo it's the abstractness of the whole photo, the repeating patterns and the texture of the wooden stairs. What do you think?

Two From On High

A friend and I went for some outdoor shooting yesterday. A good day it was, photo's were taken, good conversations were had, I like that type of thing.

The Challenge is Over

There is my last post of the twelve day challenge. I enjoyed it, but felt like I did not get a lot of great photo's. I got new ones up, but it was the older ones that really shined for me. I think I need to do more photo sessions, where I have a purpose or at least spend a good amount of time taking photo's (not quantity, but quality). If I don't, it's like this photo, it's thrown together and doesn't feel like I accomplished much....but so it goes.

So here's the challenge for you...suggest my next photo challenge. I have the right to veto anything and probably won't do a challenge for as long as this last one. But leave a comment of what you would like me to attempt and we can discuss it.

Oh and I do have a few bonus posts coming up soon.

Wow a lot of photo's from today, my biggest post from this challenge (excluding bonus posts).
It was snowing today, and I went out and got a few photo's. I ended up missing the big flakes though, next time. But the cattails photo does have a few specks of snow floating about.
Also, yes I realize I did go a little far with the brightness on some of these photo's, but that's what I get when I listen to Wolfmother while post-processing photo's.

So here's a little scratch that I got yesterday, it stung at the time, but really it's a very small scratch. I really didn't have any ideas today, so this is what I came up with. The macro lens +4 and +2 were stacked together for this shot.

Even more photo's from Michigan, will they never run out? (Yes, tomorrow in fact will be the last of them.) Whenever I see big bolts, or the like, I have to take photo's. I don't know what it is, I am just intrigued by them... weird, I know. For that first photo, I really cranked up the contrast, it brought out the imperfections in the wall so much more, plus the raindrops, yes the raindrops. Enjoy.

Did Someone Say Pistachio?

Delicious! That's what I have to say about this photo. Not only do I think the photo turned out well, but I got to eat the pistachios while I was processing this photo. Double bonus!

I really enjoy how the salt and the shell and the nut itself really have good textures. I also like the green, but just learned that it is a added dye, which is a bummer if you ask me. But they still tasted good!

Once again, photo's from Michigan from last spring. The second photo, was one that in my mind didn't quite work, but I knew it had potential. So I monkeyed around with it, and when I made it a B&W, I knew I had something. So the lesson learned for today is, if the photo is almost what you want, play with it for a while, change it drastically and you might be surprised....experiment.

I had to do a macro shot again, just had too. But I didn't know what to do it of, so I pulled out the trusty mandolin. I wanted to capture the shape of the sound hole, and not much else, but also keep the background a little interesting. I think I succeeded in that en-devour. Enjoy!

Here's a few photo's taken last April, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I love how the sign on the middle photo is aged so nicely. I like how it's torn on the edges and the one lamp is turned to it's right, not centered like the other two.

Santa's Not Coming to Town

So I had a little scuffle this morning, a man (? probably a jolly old elf) in a red suit with a large bag, which is quite an odd outfit not to mention a strange accessory. Anyway, this man/elf approached my house and was angry that I didn't have a chimney anymore (it was taken down this summer), he was claiming that I was making his job harder by not having a chimney. I was very confused at this, then he pulled a knife. Luckily I got it from him, but not before both of us were cut. He got away on a sleigh, maybe he's Amish, though the sleight was red? It was a weird morning, but needless to say he probably won't be working today or the next few. I hope I did not ruin anybodies holiday.

Guess I went a little darker today. But not to worry, no elves or humans were harmed in the making of this photo.

I had a friend post "More photos please!" on my facebook wall today. So I've decided to accept that challenge. For the next twelve days (through the second of the new year) I will be taking a new photo and posting it here. There may also be some "bonus" photo's, which are old photo's that have never been posted.

This photo was very quick, I took one shot and changed the angle and took one more, the photo you see is that photo. I wanted this to be very abstract and since I have a few Christmas lights up, I knew exactly what I wanted. If I were to redo this shot, I would have more "white space" or in this case "black space".

This shot is just over 3 hours long, the shutter went off every 53 seconds. I thought it was a very clear day, but there were enough clouds going over to make it a little more dark than I wanted. Enjoy.

Chicken Chasing

Helped with catching some chickens this weekend. Okay so I didn't help, I was just there to photograph. We were answering a Craig's list ad, weird what you can find on Craig's list, and no none of us were kidnapped or anything, but we did have a backup plan for that. So here's a few shots of the "chased" from Saturday. I find that shooting things that are alive is a lot harder to do, I mean it's common sense, but at the same time I did not think it would throw me off so much. Please enjoy.

Some scraps left over from a little project that I (mostly) did tonight. Any guesses of what that project might be? If your name is Dana, you may not guess.

Photography wise, I think I'm getting a little bit better at using my off camera flash. The flash is directly to the upper left of the paper ball, and that added a nice contrast. Yes there was some good darkening in post production, but that stuff is so much easier when the lighting is good in the first place.

So I ran across this little post in newsreader the other day. I both really, really dislike and love that article at the same time. It points out to me that I'm weak when it comes to photography, but at the same time it shows that I can improve and in a few areas. It's one of those kind of things for me.

So the photo's from today. I put in the effort with these photo's (even though you are probably thinking that the first one is kind of crappy), I knew what I wanted before I took the shot. I think for the first photo I only opened the shutter twice, the same for the second photo. In the first photo I wanted the bokeh effect with the nice shinny parts, yes the nice shinny parts. The second photo I love, cause that's what I imagined it to be. When I say the put the effort in, I'm saying that really I spent a few extra seconds thinking before I even brought the camera up to my eye, that's all. Enjoy!

Tried to get some good macro's of the frost, but it wasn't working, this was a much better picture. I was so glad on the drive home when I noticed that there was a good amount of frost on the trees, I thought I had missed it for sure. Enjoy.

Not Quite Smoke Rings

Saw this as I was driving home tonight, had to turn around and get a picture. I really upped the contrast so you really only see the silhouette of the house. What initially attracted me to this scene had to be the smoke. In the time it took me to turn around it had changed just enough to be different. The smoke was coming out of the chimney and then going straight to the right, it did not have that bump at the beginning. Enjoy.

Here's that macro shot of the icicle. I have both the +10 and +4 lens on my camera, so even though it's hard to tell, it's a very small icicle, with a pretty good close up. Unlike yesterday's post, the colors aren't really played with at all, I left them as they were.

I've Lost What They Still Have

So Friday night I took some photo's at an Elementary school dance. Loads of fun, there were a lot more students there than I or any one else imagined. It was really fun to see kids just having fun, a lot of them still have no hesitation when it come to something like this. You can just tell they are having fun for fun's sake, something many of us have lost as we have grown older, a shame really. Enjoy these abstracts and remember a day when you had very few inhibitions.

Twelve Degrees, But Feels Sub Zero

You may have noticed that today I changed up the ol' blog just a little bit. It's not a huge change, but a needed change. Hope you like it.

After a number of posts of nice crisp, in focus photo's, I thought it was time to really go abstract. So tonight I went out with the camera and external flash and worked on getting "bad" photo's on purpose. The new photo behind the blog title is from tonight as well.

My favorite is the last one of course, very creepy look to it. Post production is still about the same as the last half dozen or so posts. I just went a little more lavish with the levels and contrast. Enjoy.

Frost Giant's are Here to Stay

I happened to look out the window today when it was snowing and the snowfall was with really big flakes. So of course I got my boots on and took a few pictures. The first photo is my favorite from today, it's..... nice and gritty(?).

Post production, same as it has been for a while, turn to black and white, white balance, mess with the levels until the desired amount of black is there, then unsharp mask.

SNOW!

My good friend Elliott and I went out shooting the other day, as it snowed close to eleven inches (yes there is some debate as to this amount). It was a great time to go shooting, still daylight and the snow falling pretty much the whole time we were out. Elliott is in the first photo, btw.

Yes the snow you see on the tree's, bench and road is from one day, that's what it's like to live in northern Minnesota!

Abstracts in the Snow

First photo: tire tunnel, cropped a good amount so it's not so visually annoying.

Second photo: a wall with some neat texture, I may have to go back to that someday and get better texture shots.

Third photo: Not actually mine, Elliott took it and said I could post it. Kudos to you Elliott, you have taken a few of my favorite photo's of the day. Look closely at this photo, there is a lot to it.

Fourth photo: Sewer grate.

Post processing: All photo's are of course black and white, which is an on going theme with me. Also the levels were monkeyed around with until they are all very dark, sometimes more dark then they need to be. But that's the way I like it. Unsharp mask used as well.

Walking Pneumonia

In case you were wondering what changing the aperture does to the depth of field, here it is. The first photo has an aperture of 11, while the second has an aperture of 2. So the smaller the aperture number, the shallower the depth of field, and the opposite is true as well. Your lesson for the day.

Recording

A few more photo's from the recording session on Friday night. I was trying to take photo's when no one was looking at me, I think that one of Seth at his computer is one of the few where the camera was being looked at, but it turned out good.

Post processing, is again black and white, with tweaking in the levels to bring out the darker tones, usually unsharp mask used as well.

I usually don't like shooting people, but this kind of shooting of people has to be my favorite by far.

A few photo's from last night, I took photo's while a few friends recorded some songs. The camera was the only instrument I picked up last night.

As you can see there is some heavy post processing on these photo's, I'm liking the darker or low key look, more and more. Though I did shoot very underexposed on most of the photo's last night, which adds to that look as well.

The last one is by far my favorite, how about you?

I have a few shots of the butterfly that are closer up, but this image was just better overall. One of those things where I don't think I can point out why, but it just is.
The sunset, is enhanced a bit, but that is how it looked.

Take it on the Run

So I got at hot shoe adapter today. Basically I can now move my flash where I want it, it's no longer attached to the top of my camera. Here's what I took today.

A few things: I liked the angle that I picked it works well. I tried a few straight on ones, but that wasn't working. So I'm pleased with the angle. But I should have closed the aperture a little, so I would have had more depth, and the one stormtrooper would have been in focus. Why did I have such harsh back lighting for the stormtroopers? I just don't know. I enjoy tonight's addition, even knowing those things.

So it's hard to tell that it's a yawn, but that's what I'm doing in this photo, I'm not screaming in agony like you think.

I used my ipod touch to light this shot, flashlight mode on! I was going for some low key lighting here and I think I did it pretty well for my very first attempt.

Summer Dresses Pass

That's what happens when you kick a fire twice, during a long exposure. The second photo is just shy of 25 minute long exposure, the really bright thing in the sky is the moon. Cloudy that night. But I love the colour the trees have in the photo. Also that little bit of movement that gives them an unreal quality. If you look close you see I should have cleaned my lens.

Summer Stretching On The Grass

I really love all three of these photo's, but for very different reasons. The first photo I love because of the repeating (dare I say) organic pattern and the colour green. Second photo the dreamy quality it gives, and the contrast from light purple to much darker colours on the bottom. The last photo, I love because to me it's a cool photo.

Two lights used, both different colours, blue from the back and red from camera left. Handy I used different colours, I could then make the blue more black and have the opposite effect of what the light would normally do. I like it when I learn something new.

Just moments before, "Ah, time for a nice nap." the snowtrooper said. But really it wasn't a good time for any sort of nap.

Similar setup to yesterday... large florescent bulb above and a little to the right, Vivitar flash also used, dialed down all the way and bounced off the ceiling.

Taken on Friday evening. I just missed an epic cloud photo by about a minute, but I got a good water, earth, sky one. I did not straighten this on purpose, as I sometimes do, decided to leave it that way. Adds that being in a boat feeling to it.
